Coronavirus Update: A phased return for pupils will begin on Monday 08 June 2020. The plan for each week will be that the pupils who have been attending (as they are children of Key workers) will continue to attend daily. All other pupils will attend Tuesday to Friday each week. This will allow for staff to thoroughly clean rooms that have been used the previous week, so we are confident that all health and safety precautions are taken.
Pupils will arrive by home/school transport or with parents, all of whom will drive onto the premises, but remain in their vehicles, until the pupils are asked to exit the vehicle, at 10am. Then, Mr Hattam or Mrs Crudgington will take the temperature of the pupil. If the temperature is above a certain level the pupil will need to return home with the parent or remain in school, isolated, if on home/school transport. Parents will need to collect their child if they have a raised temperature or are unwell, as home/school transport will not return any pupil home. So, parents must be available to come directly to school in such a case. This is the same if a pupil is taken unwell during the day. Once temperatures have been checked the pupil will go to their designated classroom (not necessarily their usual classroom) to sit at an allocated desk, in a room with 4 pupil desks. All necessary equipment will be on this desk, so there is no sharing of equipment, reducing the risk of infection. The staffing will be one teacher and one LSA, for each group of 4 pupils, for the whole 4 days. The pupils will remain in this room for the whole day, for the lesson times and lunchtime. We cannot have practical, interactive lessons in order to avoid the possibility of infection. There is one toilet designated per class, which will be deep cleaned at the end of each day.
All groups will have the chance to go out to the school field for fresh air on a rota basis, regularly throughout the day. Pupils will need to provide their own food and drink for the day, no school meals are available and no water fountains are in use. Please ensure that your child is dressed in different clothes each day, to lessen the chance of infection being spread, school uniform is not required. Pupils will not be able to bring into school any mobile phones or toys that they may usually bring to school on home/school transport, as we will not be able to collect belongings as we usually do, nor guarantee the safety of any item.
We plan to start this reopening in the week beginning 08 June 2020, with 3 groups of pupils. Then, the following week another group will start to attend, gradually building up, one additional group per week. This will give us a chance to see how the pupils are coping with these arrangements. During the week before your child starts to attend Mr Hattam or Mrs Crudgington will phone you to make specific arrangements for your child. 24/7 Taxis, who do the home/school transport, have informed us that for social distancing purposes taxis will usually only have one pupil on board. There may be some vehicles with 2 pupils, if there is no escort accompanying the pupils.

The INTENTION of our curriculum is for all pupils to leave The Endeavour, at the end of Year 11, being as independent as possible and to be, prepared for the journey into adulthood.
Our curriculum is designed to cover practical and experiential learning that is varied and engaging. We seek to develop the intellectual, physical, moral and social potential of every pupil in the school, always encouraging them to work towards achieving their personal best
It is important that all of our pupils make progress that is measurable, achievable and challenging, but is also relevant to their needs. In order to achieve this we use the pupils' EHCPs as a starting point to measure their progress.
To IMPLEMENT our curriculum vision our staff plan engaging lessons tailored at the pupils' ages, needs and abilities using resources that relates the learning to 'real life' experiences as often as possible. We extend the opportunities for pupils to experience learning and social experiences in the wider community by participating in regular community visits, whether to the local HIGH Street or further afield; all visits develop 'Cultural Capital' and build towards developing confident and independent young people at the end of Year 11.
The IMPACT of our curriculum structure is the The Endeavour pupils receive a unique learning opportunity that excites, motivates and prepares them for Adulthood all the way through their education. The curriculum allows pupils to make progress towards their own individual assessment frameworks, as well achieve a variety of external qualifications.
Maths is such an important part of our daily lives therefore a large part of our pupils timetables is allocated to the teaching of maths. From Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 4 the maths curriculum covers number, measurement, geometry and statistics as prescribed by National Curriculum.
What this means for our pupils is that our maths curriculum prepares them for life after school with a large emphasis placed on the maths skills they need going into adulthood such as time and money.
We ensure that our teaching of maths is as practical and hands on as possible providing real life experiences and activities. Our pupils understanding of maths is also enhanced through cross-curricular opportunities in all subjects; community visits; maths focused software and apps such as Mathletics.
English at KS3
Pupils in KS3 at The Endeavour have 5 lessons of English per week. Over the course of an Academic Year students will study at least 1 class novel, learn about a variety of Poetry styles, appreciate the wide range of Media which surrounds our current everyday lives and examine some non- fiction writing. Through these topics, students will develop their Literacy skills, basic writing skills, comprehension skills and communication skills.
Our range of activities include character analysis, story writing, creating newspaper front pages, mini projects and creating poetry.
Within our English Curriculum we use a variety of software to support our students’ learning : BugClub, Nessy, and Widgit Online. We also use ipads and a number of interactive APPs in our lessons which the children thoroughly enjoy.
English at KS4
In Key Stage 4, we work towards our English Functional Skills Qualification. There are 3 strands to this qualification: Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing. The final assessments usually take place before Easter of Year 11.
In we study texts with more'grown up' themes such as Holes by Louis Sachar, The Elephant Man and The Titanic. We have lots of discussions about the wide ranging themes that these books introduce and we work on our Literacy skills based on tasks around these books.
Science at KS2: This year Key Stage 2 pupils are being introduced to the Science lab and the equipment found there. Each week they will be given the opportunity to explore different pieces equipment and shown how to use them safely. They will learn the importance of following instructions and working cooperatively with others. By the end of the school year it is hoped that they will have gain confidence and some independence when working in the Science lab.
Science at KS3: This year Key Stage 3 will be developing their Scientific Enquiry and Critical thinking skills. They will be learning how to plan investigations, collect data, present data using graphs and how to write conclusions about their practical work.
Science at KS4: This year Key Stage 4 will be working on a Modular based course. Students will be awarded individual modules or an Entry level qualification. The course is completed over 2 years with some students sitting a written exam at the end of each module and a final exam at the end of the second year.
In Design Technology we are very lucky have had a makeover during the summer holidays. Pupils get to use a variety of materials including wood, metal and plastic. They learn how to use lots of tools and machines! In Key stage 3 this year we are making toy cars from wood. The pupils have chosen what type of wood they want to use, and will be sawing, piercing, filing, sanding and finally, painting. Key stage 4 pupils are looking at the different ways to join wood and will be making some storage which will hold their projects for the rest of the year.
We have a fully equipped food technology room containing everything you would expect to find in a modern kitchen. During food technology lessons pupils are taught the importance of quality food hygiene and preparation. This is mainly done via practical activities that see the pupils making anything from salads, to wraps, baking cakes and biscuits as well as cooking a good old fashion ‘English Breakfast’. Our pupils certainly leave their food technology lessons believing they can give Jamie Oliver a run for his money.
ICT is such a big and important part of modern life and is constantly changing and evolving. We are very lucky to have a dedicated ICT room, Google Chromebook access in all classrooms and class sets of iPads.
Our curriculum is designed to cover a variety of different areas. Our pupils learn and develop skills utilising Google products such as Docs, Sheets and Slides.
At all levels our pupils are encouraged to use and explore the internet to gather information and carry out research, underlining this is the importance of staying safe online. E-safety is taught both directly and discreetly at all times to all pupils.
During Key stage 3 and 4 pupils are introduced to basic programming using specialist software, such a scratch junior. Key stage 4 pupils also have the opportunity to work towards a functional skills qualification in ICT
The use and teaching of ICT like all subjects at The Endeavour is supported by additional learning experiences and cross-curricular opportunities as often as possible.
Forest School was introduced to our curriculum in September 2016 and has grown from strength to strength, which has seen the expansion of its delivery across the school. Forest School is a process of learning and development that takes place in a local woodland, usually as part of a programme of regular visits, offering children and young people the freedom to flex their imagination and learn in an exciting, natural environment.
Aldrin class participates in weekly Forest School sessions at Thriftwood Scout Campsite with a qualified Forest School instructor. Our primary classes participate on a six week rolling programme; Hadfield, Peake, Armstrong and Ride are also involved in a rolling 6 week programme which alternates between Forest School and Horticulture. The overriding aim of Forest Schools is to:
- Build self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Improve motivation and encourage cooperation.
- Encourage responsibility, independence and the management of risk.
- Improve language, communication and social skills.
- Improve gross and fine physical motor skills.
- Increase understanding of the natural environment and of seasonal change.
- Encourage a positive attitude to learning.
Horticulture now plays a vital role in the curriculum here at The Endeavour, with classes at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 participating in horticultural lessons. We have constructed an ‘allotment’ area in the school; have a number of raised beds, plus plenty of space around the school grounds that we plan to develop and nurture over the coming months and years. Our most recent transformation of the school grounds is our orchard containing apple, pear, cherry and plum trees, that were kindly dominated by parents and other people associated with The Endeavour, and planted by our pupils.
Our allotment area is situated next to the food technology room which means pupils will be able to get a real ‘fork to fork’ experience which is one of the many benefits of putting horticulture onto our curriculum. Here are a few other benefits:

Rudyard Kipling’s poem is the inspiration for this element of the curriculum and his six ‘honest serving men’.
In topic we look at a variety of different things, from outer space, to the Amazon Rainforest as well as our local environment. The basis of everything we look at is questioning to learn. We also take the approach that if there is a story or event of interest or importance to the pupils then that can also be integrated into the curriculum.
Creative & Performing Arts
Creative & Performing arts is a great way for pupils to express themselves as well as develop social skills and confidence. Through the drama element of this subject pupils are learning mime, freeze frame and still image through a range of practical activities, making use of iPads to record and review their work. A variety of apps including ‘Garage Band’ are used to teach music, the pupils can readily be seen composing their own music to express emotions and feelings using a variety of sounds.
All pupils in Key Stage 4 participate in work experience in the summer term. The type of work experience arranged depends on the pupil’s level of independence and confidence. In the past pupils have worked at hair salons; Kennels; Marks & Spencer and other retailers. Some of the pupils have participated in a group session.
Each term pupils look at a different type of art or the work of particular artists. From here they experiment and produce work with their own take on the style they have been studying. The focus this term will see the pupils exploring graffiti art, looking at famous artists and creating their very own graffiti writing.
Physical activity is very important for the pupils of The Endeavour and PE forms an integral part of our pupils development. Activities and sports are changed on a termly basis to ensure that pupils are exposed to as many different sports as possible, whilst being given the chance to develop their skills in the sports they do.
This term in our primary phase PE lessons we will be working on individual ‘game skills’ as well as fitness through fun running games and activities. Every Thursday our primary phase pupils travel to a local swimming pool for swimming lessons. This term in our KS3 and KS4 PE and Games lessons we will be working on fitness including circuit training and Boxercise. Our main game activity will be uni-hoc and hockey.
PSHE / Citizenship
Through the PSHE/Citizenship programme of study our pupils learn about personal development and the changes they face growing up. At Key Stage 3 we use the 1Decision scheme which covers Keeping / Staying Safe; Keeping / Staying Healthy; Relationships; Being Responsible; Feelings and Emotions; Computer Safety; Money Matters; Hazard Watch, and Fire Service. As pupils move into Key Stage 4 they develop a deeper understanding of the areas covered in Key Stage 3, as well as look further into relationships and financial awareness. The regular community visits that all classes participate in embed the classroom learning be providing pupils with ‘real life’ experiences.
